Although I am well acquainted in practice, I never heard the phrase until a few months ago as we were in the fetal stages of creating this blog. Vintage skills can be broken down into three general categories: home/life, first aid, and outdoor survival. I’d like to think I’m an expert at all three, but I thrive in the first set of skills courtesy of my mother.
Let me paint you a picture; it’s the 1970s, my parents were hippies, sporting their patchwork denim, tending to the garden, building their own furniture and eating homemade granola. My dad was great with cars and carpentry and my mom sewed clothes for all my siblings. My parents are makers by passion, not necessarily by trade, but passed down the love for working with my hands.
My generation didn’t get to take home ec as an elective in school (in Sacramento, CA) but turns out I didn’t need to. Ever since I was a little girl my mom taught me everything she knows. Of course some things stuck like crocheting and jewelry making and some dissipated like piano lessons. But the underlying commonality among all the skills I have acquired since then is the joy I find in the hand-made process. I thrive on complex instructions, minute details and hours upon hours of repetition to create a tiny masterpiece.
I eventually learned how to teach myself to fix things that were broken, study how things work and ultimately create less waste by upcycling old clothing or repurposing discarded objects. As for my survival skills, I know which way is north because my mom always quizzed me on road trips where I had to use the Thomas map book instead of watching an in car DVD player. These are life skills I don’t take for granted because they paved the way for a life filled with the desire to learn.
Here at Blooming Dreamers we find vintage skills to be an essential part of our foundation. It is rewarding not only to learn something new but to teach each other as well. Sharing knowledge is just one more way we can fortify and uplift our community, enriching the minds and lives of the next generation and sometimes an older one. This past year I have finally recognized how committed to my growth I am. At moments it feels like a high school relationship that began with a slow dance and others, a 32-year-old marriage that has finally found its stride. My husband has been instrumental on this journey I have found myself on. One of the things he brought to me was floating. The spa is located in my old stomping grounds, which holds a lot of nostalgia for me. That’s right – down the street from Immaculate Conception, around the corner from 4th Ave park and smack dab in the middle of Broadway.

He’s been so many times that I thought, “okay – this has to be good if he keeps going.” I didn’t research it, just booked and showed up. Surprisingly, I showed up at 8:15 AM already in a very zenful state. I say surprisingly because weekday mornings are full of chaos and commuting for me, which for me are recipes for the road rage I have been working on managing. Amber was the person to greet me that morning and I’m thankful that she is an empath because she served me with the same energy I was giving and that level of thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated. After my tour, I found myself in my private room naked and in love.
I took a warm shower to rid my body and hair of excess dirt and oils. Then, I opened the door to my chamber. Ya’ll, let me tell you technology has just come so far. I opted for the low frequency spa tones and blue light over the dark and silent space. But, I plan on going back so many times I will have tried something new every single time.
Once I got used to the buoyancy of the water, I was able to easily recline and began to float. Eyes closed I was daydreaming about what other sensations would be comparable to this – swimming in the ocean, gliding through space or a child being thrown in the air. It took some time for my brain to settle and stop making to-do list but I actively pushed them out so I could enjoy the experience. I felt like a mermaid. I closed my eyes and felt like I was traveling dimensions. The weightlessness of your body allows you to do things and experience them pain free. For instance, I’ve had a pain in my lower back since i’ve had my baby. Something told me to arch and release until I felt better and it was better than popping an Advil. Your brain and nervous system are thankful to you for letting them handle the situation. I followed suit with other little aches I didn’t even know bothered me until now.
Halfway through, my senses were extremely heightened. I could hear things very clearly, as if I wasn’t under water at all. My body got warmer and I am pretty sure I fell asleep on the most comfortable bed I’ll ever be on. The dreams I had were vivid and thought provoking. Many things were going through my head at the end. I was enjoying this warm weightless feeling but I also couldn’t wait to get out and tell the world about floating.
This was such a wonderful experience. I’ve finally had a couple of days to reflect, and here is what I would recommend and do differently next time:
Meditate – Identify what your intentions are before going in. My intentions were to take better care of my health and nurture my business.
Journal – Write it out the night before or day of. Mike calls the thoughts that rapidly surface and keep you from focusing, Monkey Brain. I was having a lot of disruptive thoughts. Everywhere from my last meal to going back to work in a week.
Sedate – Maybe this is a place where you want to be alert and in the moment. I did that, I don’t want to do it again. Whatever you decide to use to relax, do it. The facility has tea and CBD oil on hand.
Travel Light – I arrived with not 1, but 2 bags. I’m gonna tell you what I had so you understand you do not need anything. In my B A G S – whole makeup kit, rose oil, rosemary water, new change of clothes, shoes, body spray, lotions, lap top, journal, planner and purse. You are going somewhere to feel free and lifted. Do not go in there the same way you come out; weighed down.

I’m sure I’ve always wanted to be a writer. I can remember the times when I was in grade school and handwriting was my favorite, the action of moving my hands to create a message is one of my most loved past times. I wrote letters to my friends- some really nice, some not so nice and some were used against me whether they were trustingly handed over or bound inside my journal. These last few years I have been inspired by writers from all over and how they bring healing and self discovery into spaces longing to have a connection to positivity. That is why I am here. To experience those feelings at the highest vibrations. Every month, we want to share a journal topic with you all in hopes that you would join in and work within your heart. This question came from a very respected Instagram influencer in the wellness space; Alex Elle:
Who do you give yourself permission to be?
The first time I could recall feeling the most grave disappointment was the day I sat outside on the steps of my home waiting for my dad to pick me up and take me back to Oakland. I must have got up from those steps and returned to those steps more times than I can remember but to paint the picture, I will give you the scene. Looking to the west, you can see the whole street all the way to the horizon. Cars are going by; the neighborhood kids are running ramped in the streets. The sun moves like a slow motion lopped pitch across the sky until it starts to create the illusion of melted rainbow sherbet amongst the tops of the Oak trees lining Malaga Way. I came to terms that he wasn’t coming and joined my mom inside the house. I was just 9.
From that day on, I looked at my playmates differently. At such a young age I started making the determination that if I wanted people to depend on, I had to be that person. I was not going to accept fallacy as a component of friendship. I seemed to hop around cliques a lot, resting assured all my eggs weren’t in one basket. When people would hurt my feelings I took it so personal. I took it as an attack, and whether or not you were prepared; I took you to war. A person with this mind set becomes mean and hard. I had a barrier you could not penetrate, not unless you were willing to disarm yourself.
Over time, I realized that my attitude and my baggage were really starting to hold me down. I needed to shed the weight, to clip the ends, cleanse the palate and to revive the heart. Two months after a Valentines break up, I met a man. I was open but still resistant because I was supposed to be working on me, damn it. I was supposed to experience independence. I couldn’t shake the fact that I was absolutely sure God sent him to help with the healing. We had a friendship. A deep rooted amazing friendship; that blossomed into love.
Through this unconditional love, the love where if you looked at it on paper; should have never happened – I found me again. I found my soul. I breathed a deep breath into her and filled her with light. Every day I evolve into a person I can be proud of. The mom, who is loving and understanding but firm and adamant. The wife that challenges her husband to dream bigger and to let people into his heart. The daughter who understands now the sacrifices of a parent and who appreciates everything her Mom and Dad were able to do for her.
I see myself as someone who is not afraid to grow and accept new ideas that challenge where I have been and where I want to go. I need not accept any limits unless I want to.
When winter approaches I typically find myself in a constant state of excitement and stress. Stress as I try to make plans with my family for the holidays, striving to make sure everyone is happy. Excitement for the cozy sweaters and soft music in the mornings, seeing all the people I love in one place and the barrage of holidays to celebrate in a short amount of time. (If you know me my birthday counts as a holiday, I’m just saying!) But each year I try to spend more attention on the things that are enriching instead of “door-busters” and Black Friday sales. I prefer to give homemade gifts and make big meals with my partner for our favorite people.
However more recently I’ve been embracing the coming winter and what it offers me spiritually, by being still, specifically on December 21st, the Winter Solstice.
We all know it’s the shortest day of the year but that’s not all. December 21st typically goes unobserved as it sits in the shadow of Christmas day. But what many of us don’t know is some of our favorite Christmas traditions originated as ways to celebrate the Winter Solstice like hanging a wreath on your door, decorating an evergreen tree and sitting by the fire with family.
Try this: Instead of buying a wreath this year, go outside with your family in nature and have each person pick a branch from an evergreen tree. Arrange them in a circle and tie them together as a symbol of family unity. However you celebrate with your loved ones don’t forget to spend some time with yourself.
The word Solstice loosely translates as “standing sun.” In other words, the position of this celestial body is no longer visually progressing toward the longest or shortest day of the year but rather appears to be temporarily stationary. I see it as a time to pause, take note and observe something larger than myself. Because we are experiencing ample darkness (specifically in the northern hemisphere) on this day, one way I plan on honoring the cycle is to meditate. Meditation is an inward act, just as winter encourages us to spend more time indoors. So this Winter Solstice I advise you to do the following:
Find a quiet space either in your home or out in nature where you feel at peace. If outside, watch as the sun sets on the shortest day of the year and really be present in your thoughts. Write a poem, sing a song or just simply express gratitude in whatever form of creativity that suits you. If you’re indoors for the Solstice, grab a candle and a comfy seat. Turn off the lights and take a few moments in meditation or reflection. Spend some time acknowledging the year that’s past with acceptance of the journey and its highs and lows. When you’re ready open your eyes, light the candle and shift your thoughts to the future. This is a good time to grab a journal, focus on the light as the candle burns and write down your intentions for the coming year.
To amplify those energies you can use aromatics like incense, oils or even teas in the scents of cedar, spruce, pine, cinnamon and clove (my go-to tea during this time of year is called Winter Solstice from Peet’s Coffee). If you’re into Crystals like me, I recommend using garnet, onyx, rose or crystal quartz and chrysocolla either during meditation, placed on your altar or carrying them on your person throughout this seasonal transition. Regardless of how you celebrate remember to center yourself, show gratitude and share the love this Winter Solstice.
I began actively seeking out turmeric after I became a mother. My body went through a very painful and drastic state that left me quite out of balance. My high risk pregnancy was quite the affair, the delivery was a grand production, followed by a prolonged hospital stay due to a septic vessel experiencing several surgeries, a night in the ICU and 8 transfusions. Needless to say, but I am saying it; I had to take a proactive approach into helping my body recover at every level possible. My hemoglobin count was low, I was dealing with poor autoimmune responses while trying to produce breast milk and stay on top of all my other obligations and responsibilities. I wouldn’t call it failing speaking on my own behalf, but that is the best description I can offer at the moment.
This tropical golden root spice has so much to offer that it’s nearly impossible for us not to want to work it into our personal self-care routines. Powerful healing properties are encased within cucurmin, the active element that gives turmeric its divine coloring and provides cell protection that makes the root such a sacred commodity. The uses are multitudinous – allergies, depression, cancer, gut health, muscle aches and hyperpigmentation just to literally name a few. Again, you can thank curcumin for its strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant features.
This powerful cousin to ginger has the ability to heal and change lives. But only if we use it wisely, and vet our sources. Turmeric can be found just about anywhere – but a good product knows not only how to provide but also to advise. For instance, black pepper aids in the absorption of the compound; which is extremely important since Turmeric metabolizes in your body very rapidly. I wish we could give you better recommendations, but as always get professional advice when healing and treating your body. But we are absolutely not going to leave this blog without some great ways to take in magic:
1. Drink it!
For those that have a serious tree nut allergy, I got you. The nut free vegan has a spicy recipe that tastes a bit like a chai tea latte. Love nuts? Try this recipe with almond milk http://thenutfreevegan.net/turmeric-golden-milk/ . Also, insider mom tip; I mixed my milk or formula with chamomile and turmeric on fussy nights and the result for my little was heavenly.
On days where my body feels sluggish, nauseous and bloated, I go right to my capsules. I did purchase a brand from the grocer, however when this bottle is out I will be going for something I make at home so that I have less fillers and more of the good stuff.
3. Face Mask!?
Let me tell you, you may not need to see an esthetician’s ever again. Try mixing turmeric, greek yogurt and honey into a thick sticky paste when your face humid feeling hot and inflamed. It will cool it down and the honey will cleanse any bacteria away. Want to level down your fancy? Simply purified water and turmeric mixed into a paste can wipe away dry skin and hyperpigmentation in as few as 5 days.
4. Savory recipes
Potatoes can be eaten anytime of the day and year. Enough said.
Not only can it whiten your teeth, it can enhance your gums and enamel! I haven’t tried this yet but I promise when my activated charcoal toothpaste is gone, I am going take a walk on the wild side and deviate from my plans to see if this really works. Surveys say that it’s tried and true!

It’s time to collaborate with someone when you are amazed by one another’s genius. There’s a lot of ground to cover and on that journey, beautiful, amazing things will happen. Whether it’s a vacation, cooking for your families, resting on the beach or working together on life-changing contributions, it takes labors of love to fulfill these experiences. So what else would the end result be, if not serendipitous? We are soul sisters who met through an unlikely love affair that occurred on a small island of the Pacific coast. Just kidding, it was not as scandalous a story – we had a friend we shared in common. Our journey began bussing the number 51 from the neighborhood and landing at our first jobs together – which shall remain nameless since they did us no favors. The rest was beautiful history and now we are manifesting destiny. Through thoughtful words and vivid imagery, we are researching what it takes to care for your body inside and out; all so you can find restorative therapy in getting back to the basics of healing and growing.
